A young woman accused of spitting on a council administrator during a volatile public meeting in Sydney has been charged.

The 26-year-old is set to face Newtown Local Court on June 16 charged with offensive behaviour, for allegedly spitting on administrator Richard Pearson at the first meeting of the Inner West Council on Tuesday night.

Council workers were jostled and booed when about 200 protesters, including sacked mayors and councillors, seized control of the meeting and shut it down.

Riot squad police were called in to rein in the rowdy crowd, who were protesting against council amalgamations and the WestConnex roads project.

A spokesman for the protesting group, No WestConnex: Public Transport, said he condemned any offensive behaviour and would not accept the 26-year-old woman as a member of his group.

"We don't condone that behaviour," Chris Elenor told AAP on Friday.

"We have conducted a number of moves against WestConnex that have been respectful and non-violent."

But the woman, reportedly graphic artist Nicky Minus, has been supported by one of her employers.

A magazine that has features her work, The Lifted Brow, said she was "on the right side, always".

"Just so everybody is clear: we stand one-hundred-and-fifty-bajillion per cent beside and behind Nicky Minus," the magazine tweeted.
