A 48-year-old man has been charged after an explosion led police in Sydney's north to discover a drug lab.

Police say emergency services were called to a detached garage in East Kurrajong early on Tuesday morning after reports of an explosion.

They found a van damaged by fire, and after checking to see if anyone was in the garage, discovered a secret laboratory.

The man was charged with manufacture prohibited drug and refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday.
