Staff at a Newcastle chicken factory are returning to work after a chemical leak resulted in more than 20 people being taken to hospital.

Up to 300 people were removed from the Baiada Poultry factory in Hawthorne Street, Beresfield about 8.30am on Monday, a Fire & Rescue NSW spokeswoman told AAP.

More than 25 people were taken to hospital with symptoms including nausea and shortness of breath, a NSW Ambulance spokesman said.

Staff have now been given the all-clear to re-enter the building, a Baiada spokesman said.

He could not confirm the type of chemical that leaked and said investigations were continuing.
