The heroics of firefighters during the recent devastating NSW bushfires have inspired thousands to join the RFS.
Rural Fire Service (RFS) spokeswoman Natalie Sanders says more than a year's worth of applications have been received since the fires started two weeks ago.
"The last couple of weeks has seen volunteers work hard to look after communities and has inspired people to lend a hand," she told AAP on Thursday.
However, she said the huge backlog of applications meant it would take some time before volunteers are ready for the current bushfire season.
"It's going to take a long time to get people trained," she said.

"It's greatly appreciated and we ask that everyone waits patiently as we get back to them."
Volunteers would be properly screened to ensure no firebugs slipped through the net, Ms Sanders said.
"People submit forms and then there are police checks and background checks" she said.
"Then there is an interview with the brigade where people are invited to the fire service where they are probationary members for six months."
Despite the rush of applications, the RFS is still encouraging people to apply for a variety of roles with local fire services.
