NSW firies brace for more extreme heat

Sydney is set to sweat through the third day of a heatwave as firefighters brace for volatile conditions across vast areas of NSW.

Firefighters are bracing for scorching conditions as a sweltering heatwave threatens NSW with dangerous fire conditions.

A total fire ban has been issued for the NSW Southern Riverina on Wednesday as the entire state sweats through a four-day heatwave.

The Riverina has been given a severe fire danger rating on Wednesday, with high and very high ratings in place across the rest of NSW, aside from the Far North Coast.

NSW Rural Fire Service spokesman Paul Best said crews were on standby against hot, dry and gusty conditions which could prove to be a volatile mix.

Temperatures are expected to hit 32C and 34C in central Sydney over the next two days, 39C and 41C in Penrith, and 40C or more across rural NSW.

Paramedics are urging Sydney residents to drink plenty of water and spend as little time outside as possible.

NSW Ambulance Superintendent Murray Traynor has reminded people to wear sun-smart clothing and never leave children or pets inside cars.
