NSW flu season hasn't arrived yet

NSW Health says there's still time to get the flu jab as the influenza season has not yet hit.

Fewer people in NSW are falling ill with the flu so far this winter compared with last year's horror influenza season.

The latest Influenza Surveillance Weekly Report shows just 53 confirmed flu cases across the state for the week ending June 10 - compared to 404 this time last year, NSW Health said in a statement.

The recent tally is also a decrease from the 80 cases confirmed the week before.

NSW Health's Jeremy McAnulty says the tally shows the flu season has not yet hit and there's still time to get vaccinated.

"Vaccination is your best defence against flu so if you're yet to have your flu shot call ahead to your GP to check they have the right vaccine for you," Dr McAnulty said in a statement.

He's also urged people to maintain healthy hygiene habits such as coughing and sneezing into your elbow, regularly washing hands and staying home when sick to prevent the spread of the flu and other viruses.

As a result of last year's flu season, which was the worst on record in NSW, the state government committed to spending $22.75 million on immunisation programs in 2017-18.
