NSW flu season officially over

NSW has declared the official end of the 2018 flu season, the mildest since 2013.

NSW has recorded its mildest flu season in five years - partly thanks to a jump in people getting vaccinated.

The state's health agency on Monday declared the official end to the 2018 season, which lasted nine weeks.

More than 15,000 confirmed cases of influenza were reported in NSW between January and October, compared to about 101,000 for the same period last year.

Reported deaths fell from 661 last year to 31 so far in 2018.

NSW Health said it was the mildest flu season since 2013, pointing to the higher number of vaccinations.

"There was a 50 per cent increase in requests for flu vaccines across NSW and the vaccine this year was a better match to the main flu strains," Dr Vicky Sheppeard said in a statement.
