NSW give Shield leaders Victoria the blues

Sheffield Shield frontrunners Victoria have suffered an innings defeat at home against old rivals NSW.

NSW kick-started the second half of the Sheffield Shield cricket season with a crushing win of an innings and 77 runs over leaders Victoria at the MCG on Saturday.

Opener Travis Dean played a lone hand for the home side, carrying his bat for 79 not out as the Vics were bowled out for 188 midway through the afternoon session of the final day.

Dean, who also top-scored for the Bushrangers in the first innings, batted for some nine hours in his 211-ball knock.

NSW's Will Somerville took four of the wickets to fall on the final day snaring 4-68 with his off-spin.

Victoria opened the day in a near-hopeless situation at 4-78, still requiring a further 187 runs just to make NSW bat again.

Blues seamer Sean Abbott (3-32) made the initial breakthrough after a stoic 90-minute stand between opener Dean and wicketkeeper Sam Harper (18).

Somerville (4-68) then struck twice in quick succession snaring Evan Gulbis (two) and Scott Boland (five), leaving Victoria 7-135 at lunch.

Local hopes were briefly raised as Dean and Jon Holland (34) put on 57 for the eighth wicket before Somerville again struck a double blow to end the innings.

Victoria debutant batsman Will Pucovski was unable to bat due to injury.

NSW's massive first innings lead of 245 was set up on day three by a 202 fifth-wicket partnership between Ed Cowan (212) and wicketkeeper Peter Nevill (118).
