NSW govt to extend metro to new airport

The NSW government will extend the Sydney metro with four new routes including a link to the new western Sydney airport.

The NSW government's Sydney metro will extend to the new airport at Badgerys Creek and further into Sydney's southwest if the coalition is re-elected on March 23, the premier says.

Gladys Berejiklian on Thursday announced four new routes with early planning to start over the next four years.

The new routes include Westmead to the planned western Sydney airport, Bankstown to Liverpool, St Marys to Rouse Hill and the western Sydney aerotropolis to Macarthur.

Ms Berejiklian said construction on the Metro network was necessary, not just for the city's commuters and families, but to take pressure off the existing heavy rail network.

"Our government is not sitting on its hands," she told reporters in Sydney.

"We know if we want to make a difference for people now and into the future we need to keep building our metro network."

The government's first metro route from Rouse Hill to Chatswood is almost complete and due to open in May.

The second and third stages, which connect the rail line to the city and the southwest, are under construction.

The premier and Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Monday promised to jointly fund another metro rail line between St Marys and the new Badgerys Creek airport.
