A man has been charged with stealing 700kg of copper in the NSW Illawarra region.

Police say the 43-year-old was nabbed crouching behind a car inside a Unanderra industrial estate about 1.30am on Friday, before officers searched the vehicle and uncovered the stash.

The Hammondville man has been bailed to appear at Port Kembla Local Court on July 20 charged with stealing, trespassing, malicious damage and driving an unregistered vehicle.
