A man and woman are facing charges of assaulting and neglecting her two-year-old son.
The 27-year-old man and 22-year-old mother were arrested at a Newcastle home on Wednesday following an investigation by the child abuse squad.
They are accused of physically assaulting and injuring the toddler.
The man, who is charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, has been refused bail and will appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday.
The boy's mother is charged with common assault and child neglect. She will face the same court on July 23 and has been granted conditional bail.
