NSW music festival dealer gets jail time

A man who was caught with 53 drug tablets in his pants at a Sydney music festival has been sentenced to at least seven months in jail.

A man caught smuggling 53 pills into a Sydney music festival has apologised to his dad after being sentenced to a minimum seven months in jail.

Lance William Shiels, 24, had stuffed the drugs into his underpants to give to 10 school friends at last year's Stereosonic Festival in exchange for a free ticket and a few of the tablets, his lawyer's told Sydney's District Court on Friday.

But Judge Andrew Scotting rejected this, and when Sheils heard he would be going to jail he became distressed, rubbing his face before whispering "I'm sorry" to his father and a female supporter.

"The supply of drugs to young people at music festivals must be condemned in the strongest possible terms," Judge Scotting said.

He found Shiels's claim that he was simply carrying the drugs for friends was "self-serving and uncorroborated".

"It is hard to assess the true involvement of the offender," he said.

Shiels is remorseful and has a good chance of being rehabilitated, the court heard.

He was sentenced to a maximum 18 months in jail.
