NSW name young guns in Shield squad

Allrounder Daniel Sams and teenage batsmen Jason Sangha and Jack Edwards are in line to make their Sheffield Shield debuts for NSW.

NSW have named three potential debutants in their squad for next week's Sheffield Shield opener at Adelaide Oval.

Australia's under-19 captain Jason Sangha, batsman Jack Edwards and allrounder Daniel Sams have been included in NSW's 12-man squad for the clash with South Australia that starts on Tuesday.

Edwards, who is 18 years old, and Sams both impressed during the recent one-day tournament.

Edwards averaged 54.6 in the competition and scored 116 against Queensland, becoming the youngest batsman to post a century in one-day domestic cricket in Australia.

Sangha, who is 19, is also no stranger to records.

Sangha celebrated his maiden first-class ton while playing for a Cricket Australia XI during last year's Ashes tour game in Townsville.

Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar is the only batsman in the world to have scored a first-class century against England at a younger age than Sangha.

The presence of captain Peter Nevill, paceman Trent Copeland, allrounder Moises Henriques and spinner Stephen O'Keefe means NSW will boast four former Test players in their XI.

Pacemen Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins, who are recovering from back injuries, weren't considered as they are still being carefully managed ahead of a long summer.

Hazlewood and Cummins will instead play for NSW's second XI in a four-day match against Tasmania that starts in Blacktown on Monday.

There was strong support in cricketing circles for Steve Smith and David Warner's bans to be softened earlier this year, so the duo could represent NSW during their 12-month bans.

But Cricket Australia's code of conduct doesn't allow for sanctions to be downgraded once players have accepted the charges, meaning Smith and Warner will be restricted to Sydney grade cricket this summer.

NSW 12-man squad: Peter Nevill (capt), Sean Abbott, Trent Copeland, Jack Edwards, Mickey Edwards, Moises Henriques, Daniel Hughes, Nick Larkin, Stephen O'Keefe, Kurtis Patterson , Daniel Sams, Jason Sangha.
