The NSW Nationals leader will back a plan to open up one of the state's largest national parks to logging.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro on Tuesday confirmed the junior coalition partner would back a private members bill by Nationals MP Austin Evans to change the 41,000-hectare Murray Valley National Park back into state forest.

Mr Barilaro said the government needed to support the local timber industry "and that does mean more logging of course".

"I've got to convince our Liberal colleagues why this is the right decision," Mr Barilaro told the Seven Network.

"The Nats have got to stand up for something that is important to the region."
