NSW nurse killer sentenced 33 years later

The man who murdered Sydney nurse Mary Louise Wallace has been sentenced 33 years after his crime.

The family of Mary Louise Wallace has expressed relief that her killer has been punished 33 years after her disappearance despite still being denied the chance to give the Sydney nurse a dignified burial.

Robert James Adams, 64, was last year found guilty of murdering the then 33-year-old, who went missing in September 1983.

Her body has never been found.

Adams was sentenced to at least 15 years behind bars in the NSW Supreme Court on Friday, where Justice Richard Button condemned the "extremely grave" offence.

He offered Ms Wallace a lift home from a North Sydney wine bar after falsely telling her friends he was a police officer.

Justice Button found Adams parked the car and applied pressure to Ms Wallace's windpipe with his hands in order to force her to have sex.

Outside court, Ms Wallace's sister Anne Fraser said at least Adams had been made to pay for his crime but it didn't bring back her sister.

"We wish he would say where she is, that would be something for us, but this is as good as we can get," she said.

Justice Button described as "forlorn" the family's hope Adams would one day reveal the whereabouts of Ms Wallace's body.
