NSW police urge pug robbers to return dog

Sydney police are urging three men to return a pug puppy as conditions heat up after the animal was snatched from his owner during an evening stroll.

Three dognappers have been urged to return a pug puppy that was stolen at knifepoint in Sydney's west, with police concerned the animal is at particular risk in the extreme heat.

"Considering the environment which we're facing in the next three days and the extreme weather temperatures, this dog, being a puppy, needs specific care and attention," Detective Inspector Paul Arnold said on Friday.

Police say the owner of the 14-week-old dog, named Egg, is very distraught.

They say three men threatened the 29-year-old owner with knives on a street in Sydney Olympic Park on Thursday night, snatching Egg along with the owner's backpack and wallet.

"It's a very low and cowardly act, not only taking this man's property, they've also had the temerity to take his puppy dog," Det Insp Arnold told reporters in Sydney.

Pugs are at more risk of heat stress or heat stroke than other breeds, the Australian Veterinary Association says.

"These types of dogs have been bred to have exaggerated features, including a very short muzzle. Unfortunately, this particular feature leads to breathing difficulties, which only worsen in hotter temperatures," spokesman David Neck said in a statement on Friday.

Det Insp Arnold urged the thieves to return the pug to the nearest RSPCA or animal shelter.

"It may be in their own interest to come forward," he said.

With pug puppies fetching up to $2500, police will investigate the possible onselling of the dog.
