NSW private building certifiers under scrutiny

The state's private certifiers are coming under scrutiny after it was revealed six were responsible for approving 130 buildings with compliance problems.

It has been revealed that a small band of private certifiers is reportedly responsible for approving more than 100 NSW buildings with compliance problems.

As the breadth of the state's construction industry crisis continues to be uncovered Nine's newspapers reported six NSW offenders were hit with 111 disciplinary actions between them since 2005, making up a quarter of all such penalties.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported the six certifiers signed off on 130 buildings with problems, including one building which did not have toilets or taps fitted.

The role of private certifiers in the building industry is expected to come under the scrutiny of NSW building commissioner David Chandler after he was appointed to the role by the state government this week.

Mr Chandler's appointment comes in the wake of a series of dramas involving unit buildings across Sydney, including Opal Tower at Sydney Olympic Park and Mascot Towers in the city's east.
