The IGA supermarket chain is set to become a bigger challenger to Coles and Woolworths on news that it will be taking over all Franklins stores in NSW.

Grocery and liquor wholesaler Metcash has announced it's acquired the Franklins supermarket chain for around $215m.

South African firm Pick n Pay, which owns the Franklins business, says it was made a takeover offer it couldn't refuse.

Metcash chief executive Andrew Reitzer says the IGA network is now in a more competitive position against Woolworths and Coles in NSW.

"The IGA network will significantly improve its competitive position against the national chains in Australia's largest grocery market, NSW, while growing the market share of Metcash supplied retailers in the state from 11 per cent to 17 per cent", he said.

Franklins, home of the 'No Frills' brand, was established in Sydney by Frank Lindstrom, in 1941.
