NSW schools to choose own emergency plan

Schools in NSW have been told to choose a plan for notifying parents of emergencies that best suits them, as Victoria rolls out a mass SMS approach.

The state's public schools are being left to choose their own approach for contacting parents in emergencies, rather than following a Victorian approach of mass texts.

A NSW Education Department spokesman told AAP some schools have adopted a mass text-message system to notify parents, while other schools have found social media or their website a better approach.

"It may be if you have a small school it might be easier to call (parents) up, but if you've got a school with over 2000 kids you need a way to inform parents as quickly and effectively as possible and an SMS network works well," he said on Friday.

The Victorian government announced on Friday that state schools will soon be able to send mass texts to parents after reports some were finding out about bomb hoaxes through social media.

The system was installed at all schools last year but has not been activated by all.

In NSW individual schools choose a system that best suits them after consultation with the school community, the department spokesman said.

"We're finding schools are developing ways to use social media and technology through SMS to communicate with parents when there are issues that affect not just their own child but the school in the case of bushfires or recently when schools had to let parents know about evacuations because of bomb hoaxes," he said.

"It's up to individual schools to adopt the communication mechanism that best suits them."

He said the department did not keep figures on how many schools used SMS or alternate services.
