NSW sets up state Productivity Commission

NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet has announced the establishment of the state's first productivity commission aimed to drive micro-economic reform.

Housing affordability, lower living costs and attracting business to NSW will be the focus of the first-ever productivity commission in the state.

The NSW Productivity Commission will tackle regulation and drive productivity in an effort to expand the state's economic prosperity, NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet announced at the NSW Business Chamber on Monday.

"We have laid the foundations for reform with our state-building infrastructure agenda, but now it's time for a new wave of growth, to lift the fortunes of our state and its people," Mr Perrottet said in a statement on Monday.

"We need ongoing reform to continue to fuel our state's economy and improve living standards for everyone who lives and works here."

The commission will be lead by a yet-to-be-announced commissioner who will focus responding to users' needs and changes in the market.

"This means a light touch approach that is focused on outcomes rather than on rules," Mr Perrottet said.

"The public will also be able to have its say on how government processes can be improved and what we can do to make it easier to live, work and run a business in NSW."

The Treasurer also announced a soon-to-be-appointed chief economist for NSW.

The state's first chief economist will act in an advisory role on economic issues, analysis, and trends with NSW Treasury and will work with the productivity commissioner as well as government agencies, public and private policy leaders, academics and the business community.

"The chief economist will be a new driver of innovative and visionary economic analysis and advice in NSW, strengthening our state's capacity to respond to global and local economic trends," Mr Perrottet said in a statement on Monday.

Applications for the role open on Monday.
