An Uber driver is accused of sexually assaulting a woman on the way to her Sydney home.

Police allege the driver pulled over at Carlingford in Sydney's northwest and sexually assaulted a 26-year-old woman who had ordered the ride-sharing service shortly after 11pm on Saturday .

He allegedly then drove her home. He was charged with sexual intercourse without consent and indecent assault on Tuesday.

Uber says the driver has been removed from the service and that the business is working with authorities.

"Our thoughts are with the woman and her family at this time," Uber said in a statement.

It's understood the driver held a Hire Car Driver Authorisation from the Roads and Maritime Services, which includes a criminal check.

He was expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
