NSW woman allegedly sexually assaulted in laneway

Police have been told a man allegedly forced a woman into a laneway in Tamworth before reportedly sexually assaulting her and fleeing.

A young woman has allegedly been sexually assaulted in Tamworth in northern NSW.

Police say the 21-year-old was walking along White Street about 1am on Sunday when she was allegedly approached by a man who forced her into a laneway, sexually assaulted her and fled.

A passerby came to the woman's assistance and they went to police together.

The woman was taken to Tamworth Base Hospital.

The man is described as being of Indian Sub-Continental appearance, in his late 20s, about 170cm tall, with short black hair and facial hair.

He was wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans.
