NSW's top cop preparing to sing swan song

A guard of honour and march out ceremony will be held in Sydney's southwest on Friday to farewell NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione.

Andrew Scipione is spending his last few days as NSW's top cop as he prepares to be farewelled by colleagues.

The retiring NSW Police Commissioner will be honoured on Friday at a ceremony in Bankstown - the district where he started his police career 37 years ago.

The ceremony will feature a guard of honour and march out ceremony and a speech by the outgoing chief.

Mr Scipione, whose contract was extended by two years in 2015, will officially leave his posting on Sunday, after spending nine years and seven months as the state's top cop.

He is the state's longest-serving police commissioner since Norman Allan, who served for almost 11 years until 1972.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian is likely to announce his replacement soon after her pick goes to cabinet on Thursday.

The decision will be based on an independent panel's assessment of eight contenders.

Among the frontrunners is Assistant Commissioner Mick Fuller, who is the commander of the Sydney metropolitan region.

Mr Fuller is the NSW Police spokesman for domestic violence and oversees security operations including New Year's Eve in Sydney.

He was also part of the initial police response to the Lindt cafe siege.
