A crocodile has become roadkill after it wandered onto a busy Darwin street overnight.

Police say the 1.5 metre reptile was crossing Bagot Road in Ludmilla around 11pm on Sunday when it was accidentally run over.

"It's not usual that we do have crocodiles walking on the road but I guess high tides, wet season, it probably got a little bit disoriented and lost," Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen told ABC local radio.

"It chose the wrong place to wander."
