NT escapes damage from Cyclone Owen

The Bureau of Meteorology has cancelled cyclone warnings for the Northern Territory, which has escaped damage - but the cyclone is now moving to Queensland.

The Northern Territory appears to have escaped serious damage after Cyclone Owen hovered near the coast for much of the past two days before moving offshore and east.

While islands and coastal parts of the Northern Territory mainland were battered by gale force winds and heavy rain, Emergency Services chief officer Jason Collins said he was not aware of damage to property.

"We are flying over, doing a proper assessment of where the cyclone touched land and where it went close to the coast," he told reporters.

"We're also speaking with community members going back out to their homes (from emergency shelters) to inform us too if they've had any damage associated with the winds."

Some roads were still closed, with people warned not to drive in the area as debris and damage could make it hazardous.

The Bureau of Meteorology cancelled the cyclone warning but a marine wind warning is still in place for the Roper Groote Coast.

Owen is moving farther towards the Queensland border with very destructive winds expected.

It's forecast to intensify into a category four system as it continues over the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Remote communities are bracing for 280km/h winds and much of the state is on flood alert before it hits as early as Friday night.
