NT floor price on alcohol in effect

A floor price on alcohol has come into effect in the NT to tackle alcohol related violence and crime.

The Northern Territory has become Australia's first jurisdiction to impose a minimum price on alcohol with new laws banning cheap $4-to-$5 bottles of wine favoured by alcoholics.

From Monday a minimum price of $1.30 per standard drink or unit of alcohol applies, meaning a bottle of wine can't be sold for less than $9.

With Territorians having the highest rates of hospitalisation related to alcohol abuse in Australia, the case for tackling the problem was clear, Health Minister and Attorney General Natasha Fyles said.
