NT looks to reform sex work laws

The Northern Territory government has released a discussion paper into the possibility of reforming its sex work regulations.

A regulated but decriminalised model is being considered by the Northern Territory government to ensure the safety and rights of sex workers.

The government has released a discussion paper as it considers reforms in the sector and the issues faced by those in the industry.

Attorney-General Natasha Fyles said the government was working to provide a safe and sustainable framework for sex workers.

"Being a sex worker is a recognised profession in the NT, but workers have no protection and minimal rights," she said.

"All Territorians deserve to be safe at work.

"That's why the Territory government is working on legislative reforms to deliver a safer and more sustainable framework for sex workers, their industry and the broader community."

It is currently not illegal to be a sex worker in the NT and the government says it has no plans to change that.

However, there are no licensed escort agencies in the Territory and businesses that provide sexual services are generally operating without complying with existing legislation.

Brothels are also still outlawed.

As a result, many sex workers use hotel rooms or clients' homes, something the discussion payer says puts them in a potentially unsafe environment.
