A Northern Territory man is lucky to be alive after he was attacked by a two metre saltwater crocodile in a remote Indigenous community.

The 54-year-old man was wading in a waterway near the Palumpa community in the Daly River region when he was savaged multiple times by the saltie on Tuesday afternoon.

He was treated for wounds to the chest and arm at Palumpa medical clinic, about 230km southwest of Darwin and airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital.
