The Northern Territory government is looking to increase its population, to provide a $10 billion boost to the local economy and create 21,000 jobs over the next 10 years.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner on Wednesday launched the Territory's first population strategy which will seek to attract an additional 2600 people to the region each year.

"More people making the Territory their home is the key to our bright future, and creating the best opportunities for future generations," Mr Gunner said.

"The Territory Labor government's number-one priority is creating local jobs.

"Attracting more people to live in the Territory means more jobs."

The government's strategy includes efforts to attract early career women, mid-career workers and migrants with financial incentives.

Eligible families will be paid up to $7000 to cover relocation costs and workers could also receive a $1250 bonus after six months.

A five-year retention bonus of $3000 for singles and up to $7000 for families is also on the table.

Mr Gunner said the strategy was about attracting people to the Territory and keeping them there and also encouraging those already living and working in the NT to stay.

"This is a comprehensive, detailed plan to grow the Territory's population and create local jobs," he said.

"No other Territory government has been this serious and strategic about population growth and job creation."
