NT tourist murder hearing delayed

The court appearance for a Melbourne man charged over the murder of a French tourist in the Northern Territory has been delayed.

A Melbourne man charged with the murder of a French tourist in the Northern Territory last week has schizophrenia and has been returned to hospital, delaying his court appearance.

Pande Veleski was listed to come before the Alice Springs Local Court on Monday charged with murder, two counts of assaulting police and one of escaping lawful custody.

But the court was told the 35-year-old was not well enough to attend and had been returned to hospital after several incidents of self-harm while in custody.

The court also heard Veleski suffered from schizophrenia and required regular medication for the condition, ABC radio reported.

He is now due to return to court on Wednesday.

The charges followed the death of 33-year-old Philippe Jegouzo who was knifed in the neck in "an unprovoked attack" in front of his wife at a remote roadside rest stop north of Alice Springs on Wednesday.

Veleski was arrested the following day after allegedly spending a night on the run.
