NZ contract for son of rugby great Jones

The son of All Blacks legend Michael Jones is turning heads in New Zealand rugby and is already on the books of the national sevens team at age 17.

If he turns out anything like his famous father, it won't be long before teenage star Niko Jones is knocking at the door of the All Blacks.

Jones has taken his first major step towards emulating dad Michael by being awarded a New Zealand sevens contract on Tuesday.

It is another progression for the 17-year-old, one of the brightest talents in the game who has turned heads throughout his college playing tenure.

He led his unfancied Auckland team St Peters College to the national first XV schools crown, displaying athleticism and skill that was the trademark of his father in the black jersey.

Michael Jones is still regarded as one of rugby's greatest openside flankers. The first try-scorer at the inaugural 1987 World Cup, he served his country for 13 years and was ever-present during the domestic dominance of Auckland and the Blues in the 1980s and 90s.

Dynamic No.8 Nico Jones is in hot demand among Kiwi provinces and is reportedly considering a shift to Christchurch, home to the champion Canterbury and Crusaders.
