NZ MP might thwart unanimous gun law vote

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is looking for a unanimous vote on gun law changes but she is facing opposition from ACT leader David Seymour.

Just one MP in New Zealand's 120-member parliament could stop Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern from achieving the unanimous vote she's looking for on gun law changes.

ACT leader David Seymour, his party's sole representative, says the legislation that will ban semi-automatic weapons and assault rifles is being rushed.

"By forcing gun law reform through in three weeks the government will ensure there is no real opportunity for New Zealanders to have their voices heard," he said in a statement on Friday.

"It is deeply disappointing that the government is responding to the Christchurch terrorist attack by abandoning proper democratic process".

Mr Seymour says he wants to read the legislation, which is being drafted, before deciding whether he will vote for it.

All the other parties in parliament support the ban. Ms Ardern has said she's seeking consensus.
