NZ police arrest man over explosive, ammo

New Zealand police have arrested a man after a suspected explosive device was found at a vacant lot in Christchurch.

New Zealand police have arrested a man after finding a suspected explosive device in Christchurch where a gunman killed 50 people at two mosques last month.

Bomb squads were called in to dispose of the device found at an empty lot in the suburb of Phillipstown on Tuesday afternoon, prompting nearby homes to be evacuated.

Police said a 33-year-old man had been arrested.

A suspicious package on the Newcastle Street lot also contained ammunition, Superintendent John Price said.

Cordons around the area have since been lifted.

Local media earlier reported police descending in numbers on the neighbourhood and Defence Force, fire and ambulance teams were also called in.

A no-fly zone was imposed over the area.

New Zealand's national terror threat level remains at a heightened level after 50 people were killed in the mosque shootings on March 15.

Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, has been charged with 50 counts of murder and 39 of attempted murder.

Police maintain a significantly higher presence in many areas than before the attack.

Officers on Tuesday urged residents to continue to report any suspicious behaviour in their suburbs.
