NZ police probe death of Aust tourist

Police are investigating the possibility an Australian tourist found dead on the road to Bluff may have been dead before she was hit by a car.

New Zealand police think it's possible an Australian tourist may have been dead before she was struck by a car on the South Island.

The body of 37-year-old Brisbane woman Tamara Maree Schmidt was found lying on State Highway One between Bluff and Invercargill after she was hit by a car early on Monday.

Her death is being treated as unexplained.

"We are still working out how she came to be lying in the road and we can't rule out the possibility she may have been dead beforehand," a police spokesman said.

Ms Schmidt, travelling in New Zealand with a companion, had been staying in a campervan nearby.

Her companion was staying in Invercargill.

A post-mortem examination was carried out on Tuesday but the spokesman would not say what it revealed.

A number of people had contacted police with information about the death but police still wanted to hear from anyone who saw a Britz campervan in the area after 9pm on Sunday.
