NZ soldier killed in Afghan crash

A New Zealand soldier has been killed in a road crash in Afghanistan.

He was patrolling in the northeast Bamiyan province when the accident happened, injuring three other soldiers, the New Zealand Defence Force says.

The soldier killed is the sixth New Zealand-born soldier to die in Afghanistan since the war began.

The New Zealand Defence Force will hold a news conference regarding the latest death later on Wednesday.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has expressed condolences for the death of a Kiwi soldier in Afghanistan.

The news broke minutes before her historic address to the New Zealand parliament.

Both countries' flays are flying at half-mast at the Beehive.
