He was patrolling in the northeast Bamiyan province when the accident happened, injuring three other soldiers, the New Zealand Defence Force says.

The soldier killed is the sixth New Zealand-born soldier to die in Afghanistan since the war began.

The New Zealand Defence Force will hold a news conference regarding the latest death later on Wednesday.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has expressed condolences for the death of a Kiwi soldier in Afghanistan.

The news broke minutes before her historic address to the New Zealand parliament.

Both countries' flays are flying at half-mast at the Beehive.
