NZ take women's T20 series against Aust

A Suzie Bates half-century has helped New Zealand to an unassailable 2-0 lead in their women's Twenty20 cricket series against Australia.

Skipper Suzie Bates has struck a half-century for New Zealand to clinch their women's Twenty20 cricket series against Australia with a five-wicket win in Wellington.

The result gives the White Ferns a 2-0 lead in the three-match series, with the third game on Friday in New Plymouth.

It provides a measure of revenge for the home side after Australia had come from behind to win the preceding one-day series 2-1 and maintain their hold on the Rose Bowl.

Set a target of 117 at the Basin Reserve on Tuesday, the White Ferns were able to get home with three balls to spare.

Bates and wicketkeeper Rachel Priest had New Zealand off to a solid start, putting on 59 for the first wicket at a run a ball.

Australian captain Meg Lanning then effected a double breakthrough, the seamer removing Priest for 17 and Sara McGlashan for a first-ball duck.

That brought in Amy Satterthwaite and she and Bates took New Zealand to the cusp of victory before Bates departed for 54, scored off 53 balls.

With the scores tied in the final over, Satterthwaite was dismissed for 34.

Earlier, spin again proved effective for the White Ferns who, having won the toss, restricted Australia to 6-116.

Scotland-born offspinner Leigh Kasperek followed up her career-best 4-7 in New Zealand's four-wicket win in game one at the same venue on Sunday with 3-26.

Left-arm spinner Morna Nielsen did the early damage by removing both openers, Lanning and Elyse Villani, in the space of three balls.

Lanning was bowled while trying to force a delivery away on the off side while Villani was caught at square leg off a sweep shot.

The dismissal of the in-form Lanning, who hit two centuries in the Rose Bowl series and top-scored for her side in the opening T20, was a particularly prized one.

When seamer Lea Tahuhu chimed in by having Alex Blackwell caught, the Southern Stars had been reduced to 3-13.

It was left to Ellyse Perry to mount a fightback, hitting an unbeaten 55 off 47 balls.

Both teams are preparing for the Women's World T20 tournament beginning in a fortnight in India.
