NZ to review school lockdowns after attack

School lockdowns that kept students in classrooms for almost four hours after New Zealand's mosque attacks will be reviewed.

Lockdown procedures in New Zealand schools will be examined after students were kept in classrooms for hours after the mosque terror attack.

A city-wide lockdown was imposed by police in Christchurch on Friday as the shooting unfolded.

The Ministry of Education has announced a review of the action taken by schools and early learning centres.

"Because this lockdown was for a significant period of time, covered a large area of a major city, affected a very large number of families and occurred at a time of uncertainty about the nature of the events that were unfolding it is even more important than usual that we undertake a review of all aspects of the lockdown," departmental deputy secretary Katrina Casey said on Thursday.

Students were kept in classrooms from 2.20pm until 6pm on Friday and while it largely went well, the Canterbury Primary Principal's Association reported some parents tried to remove their children early.

"We had some schools where parents were banging on the doors, sometimes threatening people, trying to take their children out of the school, which of course means we have to open up the doors and let them in so obviously that goes against what a lockdown is," the association's Shane Buckner told Radio New Zealand.

Police, three local principals' associations and parents will be involved in the review.

Terms of reference will be released when it gets underway on April 2.
