NZ's McClenaghan to miss Aust ODI series

Mitchell McClenaghan's fractured eye socket is worse than first thought, and the fast bowler will miss the three-match ODI series against Australia.

Injured fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan will miss the Chappell-Hadlee one-day international series against Australia, Black Caps coach Mike Hesson says.

The left-armer fractured an eye socket batting against Pakistan in New Zealand's 70-run win in the first ODI on Monday at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

McClenaghan hit 31 from 18 balls as he and Matt Henry put on 73 in their ninth-wicket stand.

McClenaghan was forced to retire hurt with one ball of the New Zealand innings remaining after a short delivery from Anwar Ali squeezed through a gap between his grill and helmet.

Initially, it was thought McClenaghan, who undergoes surgery on Friday, could feature in the third ODI against Pakistan in Auckland on Sunday, but Hesson said that had been ruled out.

"It appears the fracture's a little worse than first thought," he said.

"It's a two-week turnaround and, hopefully, that makes him available for selection for the (Twenty20) World Cup."

New Zealand begin their World T20 campaign on March 15 against hosts India in Nagpur.

Speaking after heavy rain forced the abandonment of the second ODI against Pakistan in Napier, Hesson said he had confidence in his squad going into Sunday's final match.

Doug Bracewell has replaced McClenaghan, and injured skipper Brendon McCullum is scheduled to make his return after aggravating a back problem when fielding last month against Sri Lanka.

Hesson said while McCullum was keen to play, he would still have to prove himself.

"Once we assess where he's at, we'll make a call. We'll have to see him at training on Saturday and see how he goes.

"He certainly won't play unless he's fit, but he's making all the right noises and doing everything in his power to be right."

Opener Tom Latham hasn't been released for Canterbury's domestic one-day final against Central Districts in New Plymouth, retained by the Black Caps as cover for McCullum.

"We're hopeful Brendon will be right but we have to make sure we don't expose ourselves - it's an important game in the series," Hesson said.
