Redevelopment of Adelaide's notorious Oaklands Crossing is running ahead of schedule for completion towards the end of 2019, the South Australian government says.
Premier Steven Marshall says the $174 million project will bring an end to 40 years of pain for commuters and motorists in the area.
"It's going to improve traffic flow, it's going to improve safety in this local area. It's what the people have been screaming for," Mr Marshall told reporters on Monday.
"People of the inner south have been waiting for this upgrade for 40 years."
But locals will have to contend with about two weeks when the road and rail junction will be shut down completely to allow for particular aspects of the road separation project to be completed.
The premier said that would be scheduled for a low-traffic period.
Transport Minister Stephan Knoll said the timing of the closures had not yet been determined but road users would be given adequate notice.
Federal Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher said the federal government had provided $95 to help fund the upgrade which would bring an end to the long delays for motorists.
"Building a rail underpass at Morphett Road will significantly reduce delays for the 42,000 vehicles which travel through this level crossing each weekday," Mr Fletcher said.
"At peak times the level crossing boom gates are down for 25 per cent of the time which causes huge backlogs in traffic here.
"We're going to get that problem fixed."
