He beat out the world's media in reporting the news he had been waiting for more than anyone. Four more years in the White House.
"This happened because of you", he tweeted at 11.14pm, East Coast time.
If the comment had been posted by anyone else, it would have appeared premature. Many were still waiting for the results of the two most critical swing states, Ohio and Florida.
NBC News declared Obama the "projected winner" of the United States Presidency via Twitter within a minute of the president's declaration, and news organisations around the world followed.

The "four more years" post became the most popular tweet in history within 22 minutes of being published.
More than 455,000 people and counting have since re-tweeted the message.
We may have seen the first social media election back in 2008, but four years later, the microblogging site appears more important than ever.
