The leader of the free world has congratulated Malcolm Turnbull on his election victory.

US President Barack Obama wrote to the prime minister, saying he looked forward to continuing joint work on pressing regional and global importance.

"I am grateful for your leadership, and your friendship, and I am pleased we will be able to continue working together to meet the challenges of our time," Mr Obama wrote.
