US President Barack Obama Sunday named the Indianapolis Colts as Super Bowl favorites, but said he had a "soft spot" for the rival New Orleans Saints and their hurricane-ravaged home city.
Obama granted a live interview to CBS News during the network's pre-game show for the National Football League Championship finale in Miami, and diplomatically opted not to throw his support behind one team or the other.
"I think the Colts probably have to be favorite, mainly because they have got perhaps the best quarterback in history -- Peyton Manning is unbelievable," Obama said.
The president said the Colts had complete confidence in their leader and said every member of the team knew its system leading to "tremendous continuity."
But he praised the Saints for their role as a beacon of hope for a city that is still struggling to overcome the terrible aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
"I do have a soft spot in my heart for New Orleans, mainly because of what the city has gone through over these last several years and I just know how much that team means to them."
Obama also praised Saints Quarterback Drew Brees, who has led his team through a season to savor. "He is just a class act, a terrific guy."
The president was set to host a White House party for the big game later on Sunday, with around 40 guests including opposition Republicans, Democratic lawmakers and wounded service members who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
