US President Barack Obama has returned to Washington from his last summer holiday as president to an agenda that will feature battles with a Republican-controlled Congress and regular campaigning for fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Along with First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia, Obama spent just over two weeks at the elite resort community of Martha's Vineyard.
The Obamas have become regulars on the island off the coast of Massachusetts during his nearly eight years in office.
Obama spent the time golfing and at the beach as well as enjoying dinners with family and friends, but the White House was quick to note he continued working amid devastating flooding in the southern state of Louisiana.
Obama will visit the state on Tuesday to survey the damage that has displaced tens of thousands of residents. He had been criticised for remaining on leave during the disaster as Republican candidate Donald Trump and vice presidential candidate Mike Pence toured the region on Friday.
Obama will also face a showdown with Congress over his request for $US1.9 billion ($A2.50 billion) in emergency funding to fight the Zika virus after health authorities reported the virus that can cause devastating birth defects in newborns had spread via mosquitoes to a further neighbourhood in Miami.
A Republican-controlled Congress reluctant to cooperate with Obama ahead of elections will also need to pass a budget for the next fiscal year that begins October 1.
Lawmakers will be in session for just a month before again taking off to campaign for November elections that include the entire House of Representatives and a third of the Senate as well as presidential elections.
The White House has said that as the outgoing president, Obama will also campaign for his fellow Democrat Clinton of the course of the autumn, making the case for his policy proposals that would largely continue under Clinton and painting Trump as unfit for the nation's highest elected office.
In the coming weeks, Obama will also be making what is likely his final trip to Asia as president to attend the Group of 20 summit in China and the US-ASEAN Summit and the East Asian Summit in Laos.
