Obama to be chairman of the board

US President Barack Obama will receive the gift of a hand-made surfboard when he meets with Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

When Bennett Surfboards got a call from the prime minister's office they thought it may have been a hoax.

The request was to make a surfboard to be presented as a gift to US President Barack Obama.

"It was a tall order," Sydney board manufacturer Greg Bennett told the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

Tony Abbott will present the board - fashioned in the colours of Air Force One and bearing the Presidential seal - when he meets with Mr Obama at the White House on Thursday.

Mr Bennett was also commissioned by Manly Council to build a board presented to Prince George in April.

On her visit in 2011, former prime minister Julia Gillard gave Mr Obama a Sherrin Australian Rules football which they were photographed kicking around the Oval Office.

She also presented him with iPods featuring Australian music.
