A comment on equal pay that referenced the US TV drama 'Mad Men' generated the greatest response on social media during President Obama's State of the Union speech.

Throughout the hour-long address there were 1.7 million tweets, according to Washington-based group Twitter Government.

For over a century the State of the Union address was delivered in writing, but this latest address also unfolded on social media platforms Twitter and Vine.

Pundits also took the opportunity to satirise the proceedings.

Social media analytics show that the Mad Men reference on equal pay generated the strongest response from Twitter users.
