Even the US president must pay taxes, and the White House says the Obamas shelled out $US121,497 ($A129,460) in federal and state taxes in 2013.
Their income was $US481,098, reflecting his salary of $US400,000 and other sources of income.
In 2013, amid difficult budget crunches, Obama convinced Congress to allow tax cuts to expire for individuals earning more than $US400,000 and families earning more than $US450,000.
This year his income puts him into that taxpayer category.
The White House blog noted that the tax changes he put through mean the "wealthiest Americans" pay their fair share, including the Obamas.

During last year's debate on the expiry of tax cuts, Obama wanted an even lower salary threshold - $US200,000 for individuals and $US250,000 dollars for families - to improve the flow into Uncle Sam's coffers even more. But he lost that fight.
The Obamas' total taxes included $US98,169 to the federal government, or 20.4 per cent of their overall income, and $US23,328 to the state of Illinois, where he claims residence.
The family donated $US59,251 to 32 different charities, or about 12.3 per cent of their adjusted income.
The largest donation was $US8751 to Fisher House Foundation that supports military families.
Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill reported an adjusted income of $US407,009 and paid $US114,492 in taxes to the federal government and the states of Delaware and Virginia.
