Steve O'Keefe is unlikely to take 12 wickets in Bangalore, but Smith Smith is confident the left-arm spinner can back up his career-defining moment in Pune.

O'Keefe claimed a staggering match haul of 12-70 in the first Test. setting a new record for best figures by a touring spinner in India.

The 32-year-old won't get nearly as much assistance from the pitch in the second Test, which starts on Saturday.

But he should still threaten India's star-studded batting order, according to Australia's captain.

"He will be fine. He's got an incredible record back home on wickets that traditionally don't spin that much," Smith said.

"He's very adaptable with the way he bowls.

"He's been working in the nets the last couple of days on getting over the top of the ball a little bit more.

"He's got different seam positions and different arm positions for different conditions and I am sure he will be able to adapt."

Smith predicted the deck would offer Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood more "pace and carry" than Pune.

India skipper Virat Kohli, who was dismissed by Starc for his first Test duck at home, suggested it was important his side didn't focus too much on the left-armer.

"I don't think there is going to be any extra variation added to his bowling suddenly. He is the bowler he is," Kohli said.

"We've got to accept that and we've got to face him the best way possible that we can as batsmen."

Smith has already named an unchanged XI, while India are still mulling their side.

"All kinds of possibilities ... might be a few surprises," Kohli said, when asked about his likely XI.

"I won't let it out right now but we do have two or three combinations that we are looking at. We'll see what works best for this surface."

Australia will retain the Border-Gavaskar if they win the second chapter of the four-Test series.
