The MobileMuster phone recycling program is calling on Australians to recycle their old handsets and accessories to provide much-needed financial support for the Salvation Army this Christmas.
The group will give $2 for every kilogram of phones, batteries and chargers recycled in December and January and hopes to collect more than 80,000 handsets to raise about $32,000.
It says there's currently an estimated 22.5 million old phones lying around in drawers and cupboards around the country and Christmas is the ideal time to dispose of them responsibly.
MobileMuster recycling manager Rose Read says it's important to keep phones out of landfill and to put the materials they are made of back into the supply chain for reuse.
To take part in the campaign old phones can be dropped at any Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, Virgin Mobile, Officeworks or Salvation Army store or can be posted direct to MobileMuster using a free recycling satchel available at Australia Post.
