Olympic charity push for a Special winter

A push to get Australians on the snow at the winter Special Olympics is being led by world champion snowboarders Torah Bright and Scotty James.

World champion snowboarder Scotty James has already won a medal with Craig Muhlbock and wants to help the Special Olympics athlete collect a few more.

James, who made his Olympic debut aged just 15, is joining fellow Australian world champion Torah Bright and hundreds of other stars raise funds for the winter Games for people with intellectual disabilities.

The 22-year-old partnered with Muhlbock last month to win a bronze medal in a snowboard race at the X Games Aspen.

It was a sign of things to come with James, later that day, becoming the first Australian man to win the X Games superpipe.

"Fresh out of a huge win with Craig, I am more than thrilled to help send him to the upcoming World Games," James says on the Games' fundraising page.

Muhlbock has previously competed in athletics, swimming and football at the Special Olympics.

Vancouver Olympics halfpipe champion Bright is backing David Campion, who recently swapped basketball for snow.

Nearly 500 pages on crowdfunding site GoFundMe have been set up to support the push to get athletes to the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria next month.

More than 2700 athletes from 100 countries are expected to compete in nine sports over 12 days.

"GoFundMe's mission is to empower people to help people and Special Olympics has been helping to empower people with intellectual disabilities for almost 50 years," GoFundMe chief executive Rob Solomon said in a statement.
