Olympic slalom champion Mikaela Shiffrin has been taken to hospital after crashing while warming up for a World Cup giant slalom race in Sweden.

Shiffrin's manager Kilian Albrecht told AP the American "basically flipped over into the net" and would not race on Saturday.

Albrecht said she would have scans on her right knee.

"She's in the hospital waiting for the MRI which will probably take a while."

The 20-year-old Shiffrin won gold in the slalom at the 2014 Sochi Games in Russia and the American also took out the slalom at the past two world championships.

Shiffrin last month won the opening two slaloms this season in Aspen, Colorado - one of them by 3.07 seconds, the largest margin in World Cup history for the women's discipline.
